Marine Training

North Queensland Maritime offers additional courses for those wishing to gain further or specialised skills in the marine environment. A qualified Ships Master in one of our many training locations conducts these courses. Courses are tailored to the individual's needs. Please contact your nearest trainer for more details.

1. Marine Radio Licences (MROCP) VHF or HF Radios
These courses are conducted on demand, subject to numbers. The course covers all aspects of the knowledge to safely operate a marine VHF or HF Radio. A licence is issued by the Australian Maritime College on completion.

2. Nautical Skills
This course involves training for both the amateur mariner and those wanting to acquire extra skills to gain employment in the Marine Industry. The course is structured to cover the basics of fishing and maritime skills as well as some advanced or specialised training.

Course content:
  • Fish identification
  • Fish processing
  • Line rigging and knots
  • Rope splicing
  • Bait catching and net handling
  • Crabbing
  • Navigation
  • Marine and fisheries legislation
  • Marine career opportunities

3. Advanced Navigation
This course starts with the basics and continues to ensure candidates are conversant with most facets of coastal navigation. The course also includes a practical navigation excursion on our commercial charter vessel. Subjects include:
  • Marine chart identification
  • Position determining
  • Course plotting with magnetic variation and deviation
  • Plotting speed, distance and bearing
  • Set and drift calculations
  • Navigation aids and their use
  • Introduction to GPS

4. Larger Vessel (Twin Engine) Management
This course is conducted on-board our 10metre Commercial Charter Vessel. Course subjects include:
  • Workplace health & safety requirements of a commercial vessel
  • Skippers safety obligations
  • Twin engine vessel maneuvering (DOCKING)
  • Use of wind and tide for maneuvering
  • Securing and anchoring large vessels
